Frederik Wurm receives Reimund Stadler Award 2016

With the Reimund Stadler Award 2016, the German Chemical Society (GDCh) recognizes the junior scientist Priv.-Doz. Dr. Frederik Wurm for his research on the synthesis of phosphorus-containing polymers and their interaction with biomaterials. The project leader at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) received the prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, on September 11, 2016, at the Biennial Meeting of the GDCh-Division Macromolecular Chemistry in Halle.

In his talk Wurm presented novel polyphosphorester and -amides. These versatile materials can be used as biodegradable polymers in modern drug carriers. Or, due to their high phosphorus content, they may be utilized in new flame retardants. In addition to Wurm, the Reimund Stadler Award also goes to Dr. Michael Sommer at Freiburg University. For the next two years, these two scientists will compile the trend report on macromolecular chemistry in the German journal „Nachrichten der Chemie”.

Since 2012 Wurm works as a project leader at the MPI-P. In summer 2016, he received his habilitation on the topic of “Polyphosphoresters and Smart Nanocarriers”. Among others, Wurm was awarded the European Young Chemist Award 2014, the Georg Manecke Award of the GDCh and the Mainz PhD award for the best PhD thesis in 2009. Wurm studied chemistry at the Universities of Mainz and Toronto. After his postdoc as a Humboldt Fellow at the ETH Lausanne, Wurm became a project leader at the MPI-P. He focuses on novel biodegradable polymers, nanocarriers and macromolecular architectures and their applications.
