Sophia Kolbinger joins the group as a bachelor student. She studies chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz. She investigates mineral water interfaces using SFG spectroscopy. For her bachelor thesis, she analyses the behaviour of calciumflourid upon flow at high pH.

Patrick Ober participated at the winter school in Bielefeld "Investigating Solid-Liquid Interfaces: The Calcite-Water Interface at the Molecular Level". During the poster session, he won a poster prize for his poster titled "Following Surface Reactions Along a Flow Channel".

Sudipta defends his PhD thesis in Chemistry at the University of Mainz. He is now working as a post-doc in Stockholm University with Foivos Perakis on structural dynamics of water.
Jenée Cyran and Shumei Sun leave the group to pursue assistant professorship positions at Baylor University, Texas, and at Beijing Normal University, China, respectively.

Patrick was awarded the third prize on the MPIP poster day; his poster was titled "Position-resolved surface chemistry of minerals upon Water flow."
Veronika Wank joins as a PhD student, working on environmentally-relevant compounds at interfacial-water.

Martin Buessler joins the group as a PhD student. Martin did his Master degree in Matter and Material in extreme conditions and his Diploma of Engineer in Physics and Computer sciences at the Polytechnic school and at the University of Orléans in France. For his PhD thesis, he will investigate the fundamental mechanisms of photo-catalytic water splitting using vibrational SFG spectroscopy.

Jenée Cyran received the prestigious Young Investigator Award of the American Chemical Society (ACS), awarded once a year by the Physical Chemistry Division of the ACS. Jenée has been working on the observation of how different trace gaces interact with ice. She presented her work at the Fall meeting of the ACS in San Diego.

Lisa now works at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt (DLR), at the Institute of Technical Physics, based in Stutttgart.

Jenée Cyran was awarded the Victoria Buch Memorial Poster Award at the GRC for Water and Aqueous Solutions. The title of the poster was "Molecular Hydrophobicity at a Hydrophilic Surface".

On May 10, 2018 the Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft has awarded the Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein prize to Dr. Ellen Backus. With this prize the Bunsen Gesellschaft recognizes Ellen Backus for her original and unique experimental contribution to unravel the structure and dynamics of molecules, especially water, at interface. The award was handed to her during the opening ceremony of this years meeting of the german physical chemistry society in Hannover.

Alejandra Sánchez, Marc-Jan van Zadel, Jenée Cyran, Yuki Nagata, Mischa Bonn and Ellen Backus have a paper Experimental and theoretical evidence for bilayer-by-bilayer surface melting of crystalline ice published in PNAS. It is a collaborative paper with University of Toyama, Tufts University, University of Mainz, FOM Institute AMOLF, Tohoku University, Kyoto University and University of California.
